Hey loves! <3
Welcome back to my little corner of the internet! I hope you’re all having a fabulous week despite this classic Irish weather (seriously, four seasons in one day in Dublin, am I right?!). Grab a cup of tea – or a cheeky glass of wine, I won’t judge! – because today we are diving into something super practical but oh-so-necessary.
Oops! Candle Wax on the Christening Gown? Don’t Panic! Here’s How to Save the Day (and the Dress!)
But first… Life Update!
Oh my gosh, guys, this week has been absolutely mental! Between running around St. Stephen’s Green trying to get the perfect shot for Instagram (the wind was not cooperating with my hair, let me tell you!) and managing a toddler who has suddenly decided that sleep is for the weak… mom-life is hitting hard right now! :-) We actually had a little family gathering last Sunday for my niece’s baptism, and it was just magical. The ceremony was beautiful, the pub lunch afterwards was delicious (nothing beats a Sunday roast!), but then… disaster struck. A drippy candle met a gorgeous lace sleeve. Panic mode activated! !!! But don’t worry, I learned everything about fixing it so you don’t have to stress.
So, let’s get into the nitty-gritty. We spend so much time choosing the perfect outfit for our little ones’ big day, and accidents happen. But when you’re dealing with delicate fabrics like tulle, lace, and satin, you need to be careful.
The Nightmare Scenario: Wax vs. Delicate Fabrics
Picture this: The ceremony is beautiful, the baby is looking like an absolute angel in one of those stunning Christening dresses, and everyone is holding candles. It’s so atmospheric and lovely until… drip. Hot wax lands right on the skirt.
My heart literally stopped for a second! These dresses are often heirlooms, or at least something we want to keep in a memory box forever. You can’t just throw them in the washing machine on a 60-degree cycle and hope for the best. Delicate fabrics need a gentle touch.
Have you ever had a fashion emergency at a big event? Tell me in the comments below!
Step 1: Do NOT Touch It (Yet!)
This is the hardest part. When we see a stain, our instinct is to wipe it away immediately. Stop! If you try to wipe hot, liquid wax, you will only smear it deeper into the fibers of the lace or satin. It will turn a small drop into a massive, greasy disaster.
Real talk: You have to let it harden. If you’re at the church or the after-party, just leave it alone. If you’re really impatient (like me!), you can put an ice cube in a plastic bag and hold it against the wax to freeze it faster. But whatever you do, don’t rub it while it’s wet!
Step 2: The Gentle Scrape
Once the wax is completely hard and brittle, you can try to gently remove the bulk of it. Do not use a sharp knife! You don’t want to snag that beautiful tulle. Use the edge of a credit card or a dull butter knife.
Gently lift the edges of the wax. If the fabric is sturdy enough, the wax might just pop right off! <3 But usually, especially with intricate Christening dresses, some residue will remain stuck in the weave. That’s okay, we’re getting there.
The Magic Trick: The Ironing Method
This is the secret weapon that every mom needs to know. It sounds scary to bring heat near a stain, but trust me on this one.
What you need:
- An iron (set to low heat – no steam!)
- Clean paper towels (white ones are best so no dye transfers) or a brown paper bag.
- A thin cloth.
How to do it:
- Place a paper towel under the stained area of the fabric.
- Place another paper towel on top of the wax stain. You’re making a wax sandwich! :-)
- Gently press the warm iron over the paper towel. Move it around constantly; don’t let it sit in one spot.
- The heat will melt the wax, and the paper towel will absorb it like magic!
- Keep moving the paper towel to a clean spot as it soaks up the oil and wax.
Pro Tip: Be extra careful with synthetic fabrics like polyester or nylon tulle, which are common in Christening dresses. If the iron is too hot, it can melt the fabric. Always test the heat on a hidden part of the dress first!
Dealing with the Greasy Aftermath
Okay, so the wax chunk is gone, but often there’s a little oily shadow left behind. This is because candle wax is basically oil. To get your little one’s gown looking pristine again, we need to tackle that grease.
For delicate Christening dresses, I love using a tiny bit of gentle dish soap (the clear kind is best).
- Dab a tiny drop of soap onto the spot.
- Gently massage it with your fingers or a super soft toothbrush.
- Rinse with lukewarm water.
If the fabric allows it (check the label!), you can then hand wash the whole garment. There is something so therapeutic about hand-washing baby clothes, isn’t there? It makes me feel so domestic! !!!
Why We Love These Dresses So Much
While I was scrubbing away at this stain, I couldn’t help but admire the craftsmanship of the dress. It reminded me of the stunning collection at ZOYA. Honestly, if you are looking for Christening dresses in Ireland, you have to check them out. They have that perfect balance of traditional elegance and modern comfort.
I was browsing their site the other night (late-night scrolling is my guilty pleasure!) and found some absolute gems. Whether you want full-on lace extravagance or simple satin chic, they have it.

Prevention is Better Than Cure!
Okay, so now we know how to fix it, but how do we avoid it?
- Bibs are your best friend: Before the ceremony or during the meal, pop a cute white bib on. It can save the front of the dress!
- The "Change" Outfit: A lot of Irish moms do this now. Have the stunning Christening dresses (adlink!) for the church and photos, and then change baby into a comfy, cute white romper for the party. Less stress, more fun!
- Watch the Godparents: Kindly remind the Godparents to hold the candle slightly away from the baby. A polite nudge never hurt anyone! :-)
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, a stain isn’t the end of the world. It’s a sign that the day was lived in and enjoyed. But knowing how to fix it definitely helps us sleep better at night! I hope these tips save a dress or two out there.
Remember, these moments fly by so fast. One minute you are worrying about wax on a gown, and the next they are running around the playground refusing to wear a coat. Cherish the chaos! <3
